At Sigma, sustainability is at the core of our business strategy. We recognise our responsibility to minimise our environmental and social impact, and we are committed to driving positive change. Using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as our guiding framework, we aim to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our business.
Since 2021, we've gone through a bigger transformation of our people, processes and systems than I could have ever imagined. We had to rip up the script while going through that generational transition, but despite the 'pushing and pulling', and while there's so much to do, we are proud to still be delivering the vision of our founders.

CEO
Our people are the foundation of Sigma’s success. We prioritise their wellbeing, safety and continuous development through dedicated programmes and initiatives.
Employee Wellbeing
Sigma supports employee mental and physical health through initiatives such as mental health awareness campaigns, wellbeing activities and the introduction of a reflection room. In 2022/23, we trained 16 mental health first aiders to ensure we have robust mental health support across the business. We also have an Employee Assistance Programme which offers 24/7 support and free access to counselling sessions. Sigma believes in bringing the team together to enjoy social events, giving them the opportunity to bond and relax with each other at seasonal and other occasions.
Health & Safety
Our commitment to safety is reflected in our processes that safeguard employees. There was a significant decrease in work-related injuries in 2023-24, with 1.05 incidents per million hours worked (down from 5.77 in 2022/23), proving that we are continually improving our safety measures to create a safer workplace.
Employee Training
We believe in continuous growth and we invest in comprehensive employee training programmes to ensure our staff have the skills they need for personal and professional development.
Sigma is deeply involved in supporting the communities where we operate, making a positive impact through various community-focused initiatives.
Sustainability Day
In August 2022, Sigma organised its first Sustainability Day, which celebrated our journey towards becoming a net zero business by 2050. This event, attended by the Mayor of Watford, showcased our commitment to sustainable business practices. We continue to review our policies and procedures and remain committed to reducing our carbon footprint and waste.
Charity and Community Engagement
Our Sigma Food Bank initiative in late 2022 provided essential supplies to local communities, demonstrating our commitment to addressing food insecurity. Other community events, such as the Diwali Charity Lunch and Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal, further highlight our efforts to make a tangible difference.
Employee Engagement in the Community
Sigma actively engages employees in community initiatives, from Mental Health Week, lunchtime outdoor walks and the opening of a reflection room. In September 2024 we implemented a new Voluntary programme for all employees which offers two paid days per year to use on volunteering opportunities within the Watford community.
Sigma is dedicated to reducing our environmental impact by cutting emissions, minimising waste, and promoting sustainability throughout our operations and supply chain.
Carbon Footprint
We have made significant strides in measuring and reducing our carbon emissions, reporting 1,446 tCO2e in Scope 319 tCO2e in Scope 2, and 1,233 tCO2e in Scope 3 emissions for 2022/23. This represents a 5% reduction on the previous year. Our carbon reduction plan for 2025/2030 includes transitioning to electric-powered vehicles and adopting renewable energy sources across our sites.
Waste Reduction
Through digitisation and innovation, Sigma is tackling waste at every level. We are transitioning from cardboard boxes to recyclable totes, reducing packaging waste. As of 2022, we integrated plastic totes into our logistics, promoting a circular economy approach to packaging.
In 2024, we announced a partnership with logistics technology innovator, BoxxDocks, to enhance efficiency and sustainability within our warehouse and transport operations. We are the first company in the pharmaceutical industry to leverage BoxxDocks’ advanced tracking technology to improve asset visibility and management. The technology offers data-driven, granular track and trace solutions which address the critical issue of inventory loss paving the way for cost savings and environmental benefits.
Our goal for 2025 is to implement solar panels across our site and we look forward to updating on its progress.
